When it comes to health and vitality it all starts with the mind; the way you think and the choices that are made from this state of mind. Occasional spa retreats, shopping sprees or weekend getaways are just not enough to recharge the body, mind and soul. Health must be maintained day-by-day so your occasional mental or physical getaways can serve as bonuses.
There are so many things in life that are out of our control that we must make an effort to control the things we can have some influence over. As our lives get denser with food borne toxins, environmental oxidants, hustle and social stress our ability to tolerate poor nutrition declines. This means we need to improve nutrient density just to compensate for the way we live today.
Instead most of us have added to these strains by making processed foods a prevalent part of our diets. It’s a natural cycle. The faster we have to swim up life’s stream the less time we have for healthy food too. Processed packaged and fast foods have become the norm and supplementation with multivitamins, minerals and antioxidants is an attempt to compensate. But supplementation alone is not enough.
The key to resolving our metabolic insufficiencies is to change the influence at a deeper level than supplemental nutrition. The way to deep mind and metabolic health is through healthy lifestyle choices which include healthy food selections despite the fright, fury and fret of the day. If you don’t have a life plan, or some sort of mapped out program for fitness or health success, how do you expect to attain and keep it? In order to achieve goals we need to have a plan.
If you desire an improvement of financial status you seek out a financial planner to establish a financial plan. If you build a home, you seek out an architect and create a building plan before you start. What’s your model or plan for fitness and health? My personal rule of thumb is 70%. That is, make seventy percent of your daily lifestyle choices healthy. If we stick to this 70% rule, the balance of our choices generally do not have enough negative weight to pull the healthy momentum offline. This 70% can take the form of three of the four meals each day being made from healthy choices; five of the seven days each week being healthy; three of the four weeks each month being stricter; but not all of these applied concurrently.
In other words you can’t eat well and choose healthy 70% of the day + 70% of the week and + 70% of the month. Your best bet is to just start by sticking with 70% of the week. This means that Saturday and Sunday can be days where more latitude is allowed. This doesn’t mean complete havoc and binging on the weekends either. Weekdays are usually easier to stay with structured programs since the day tends to be more organized. Eventually you’ll want to stay with the healthier choices all the time simply because of how they make you feel. They allow you to stay mentally focused, consciously and physically aware, emotionally stable, full of energy and physically light and fit.
Plan, plan plan and then, review the plan, know the theme and allow it to guide your choices. Choose the ‘70%’ structure that best suits your lifestyle. If 70% of the week works, stay with this strategy; this one works well for me. Now we need to define what ‘healthy’ will be. Don’t just wing it; that never works. The food selections in your food guide must represent a dense source of natural fiber, detoxifying antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Low glycemic index vegetables (below 60 GI) that grow above ground often encompass most of the food properties that fit the program.
