This book is intended for pet owners as opposed to veterinarians, and as such, uses layman’s terms and language. Divided into 5 main chapters, the introduction describes the author’s background and training, and the events that led him to write the book. The first chapter focuses on pet dog selection and ownership, and includes information on dog behavior and body language, providing essential space and time for a dog, and selecting a veterinarian and pet insurance. The information is brief but accurate, and would be useful for many first time dog owners. Chapter 2 covers nutrition and feeding. It includes feeding schedules and the different types of commonly used dog foods, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of different dog food options. Chapter 3 expands on the topic of canine nutrition by discussing biologic nutrition to improve health with vitamin, mineral, fatty acid, and antioxidant supplementation. The information presented is accurate and useful for the owner wanting to optimize health through nutrition. Chapter 4 focuses on exercise and fitness, with coverage ranging from exercise needs of the canine athlete to geriatric dogs. The emphasis is not on training schedules per se, but practical suggestions and tips for different dogs and various situations. Chapter 5 is a brief treatment of approaches to avoidance and management of health problems using diet and nutritional supplementation. Appendix 1 discusses essential fatty acids and their physiological effects, while the Appendix Essay covers oxidation, free radical formation, and the importance of antioxidants for health and disease prevention.

Some of BNHR research and findings presented in heavily referenced book

This book would be particularly useful for dog owners interested in a natural approach to nutrition. Mr. Cavaleri is a raw food proponent, and considers raw diets to be the “Gold Standard” for canine nutrition. The book also discusses approaches to obtaining optimal health with canned and dry food combined with supplements, and gives formulas and combinations for specific health and age related conditions. It should be noted that the author produces and markets his own brand of nutritional supplements. The book is easy to read and the nutrition and fitness claims are well supported. Veterinarians such as myself who are comfortable with raw food and natural dietary supplements may recommend it to new dog owners or clients with an interest in holistic approaches to their pet’s health.
